Nike Plus Sports Band - lets see how this works

Nike's feather light and ultra bright Spring collection

Light up the dark nights with a running range featuring vivid flashes of colour, breathable fabrics and seam free construction for maximum comfort. Whether it’s lifting the mileage for Marathon training or getting fit for summer, Nike’s new range will inspire everyone to get out and run this season.

Highlights include the versatile Nike Convertible Jacket with detachable easily removable sleeves.  These can be stored in the back zipper pocket quickly turning jacket into gilet – great for changeable spring weather conditions.

The lightweight waterproof and windproof Nike StormFly Jacket is available in striking pink for women, with reflective strips to help provide visibility in low light conditions.

The Nike Vapour Jacket offers an element of style with its bold colour blocking, whilst still providing runners the protection they need during inclement weather conditions in a lightweight form.

First Impressions: Nike+ SportBand | Shoes & Gear

Yesterday Nike unveiled the SportBand, a stripped-down speed and distance watch that does away with the need to use your iPod Nano for anything but music. It records the same wireless signals coming from Nike+ shoe sensor that the Nike+ equipped iPod does, only the SportBand lets you actually view your distance, pace, and time while you’re running. It doesn’t replace the Nike+ iPod, in fact the two devices can work side by side, although this feat is a little tricky to pull off since they can’t communicate with each other.

Essentially the SportBand is a USB thumb drive mounted on a polyurethane band. It stores and displays your workout metrics, holding up to 16 hours of data. At the end of a run you can plug it into your computer and transfer the workout data directly to the Nike Plus site without having to go through iTunes. The software to do this isn’t publicly available yet, so I wasn’t able to test it out.

I did, however, take the band for a couple of test runs, and found it to be an interesting but somewhat limited training companion (much like my colleague and fellow blogger, Warren). The display only shows a single workout metric at a time, so you can’t view your pace and distance, for example, at the same time. It also isn’t backlit, which makes it hard to read in the morning or evening, and it’s mounted sideways, so you actually have to hold your arm up to view it. Navigation is a two-button affair: one for starting, stopping, and laps; one for cycling through different views.
